The Founder of Japanese Whisky
Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Japanese whisky, had a vision to create a perfect whisky that reflects the nature of Japan and the spirit of Japanese craftmanship. In 1923, he took the first step toward in realising this vision and he initiated the construction of the Yamazaki Distillery, Japan’s first malt whisky distillery. For over 90 years, Shinjiro’s unswerving passion and outstanding craftmanship have been passed down from generation to generation, who have continued to take Japanese whisky to new heights.
Pursuit of Whisky Distinctive to Japan
Shinjiro Torii believed that nature gives an enormous influence on whisky that is matured over a long period of time. After a persistent search for an ideal environment for whisky making he finally reached the land of Yamazaki on the outskirts of Kyoto where the location is blessed with pure spring water. In 1973, the Hakushu distillery, Suntory’s second distillery was built in the midst of the forest of the Southern Japan Alps. Spirits s produced with Japanese unique pure spring water are matured over years in the subtle change of seasons peculiar to Japan, creating distinctive subtle, refined yet complex flavour unlike any other in the world. Furthermore. Suntory’s whisky making has continued its innovations by the craftsmen who have inherited Shinjiro Torii’s spirit of endless pursuit of perfection.
